“It’s Won,” said, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, accepting his victory as Superintendent of Miami-Dade Public Schools.
With just early votes alone, Carvalho has an overwhelming 70 percent majority votes in favor of Referendum for Amendment 362. Voters who were in favor of the Amendment, approved a 4-year tax to pay teacher higher wages and to hire additional resource officers through Miami-Dade County.
The amendment was much needed for the Miami-Dade County school district
This referendum is worth an estimated $200 million. According to the Miami-Herald, property owners will begin to see an increase in their taxes of $75 for every $100,000 in assessed taxable value.
There will be an estimated $232 million to be collected by July 0f 2019 in regard to its first year.
As a founder of the iPrep Academy, Carvalho has been recognized for several achievements throughout his academic tenure, which he served as the President of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and receiving the 2016 Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education.
I was able to attend the iPrep academy Tuesday night where Carvalho gave a brief press conference regarding his once again victory. Carvalho has been strong advocating for MDPS where he was awarded Superintendent of the Year in 2014 and then won the National Superintendent of the Year in 2016. Carvalho have much his credited win to the support of young voters.
“Young people made this happen,” said Carvalho. “Getting out to the polls casting their votes. THEY made this happen and will continue to bring change. But only if they take the action. It’s my duty to challenge the needs of young people because they’re our future.”
This brought a wavering energy in the room. Carvalho concluded by thanking his wife and several school board members throughout his speech.
After getting audience reactions, I was able to speak with several patrons to get their reaction on the victory.
Cecelia Lopez, former elementary school teacher in Miami-Dade County, express her admiration for Carvalho and all the efforts his been doing about supporting educators.
“I think what he has done for the MDPS has be revolutionary and he will continue to fight for the needs of educators and giving them the resources to help mold the future,” Lopez said.
